Shining Through the Autumn Glow
Harvesting GLOWbal Awareness This Fall |
|
KnowTheGlow continues to expand our reach with formal awareness campaigns in Ethiopia and Chile. Beyond our campaigns, we’ve been actively present at global conferences, building powerful connections with partners who share our vision: to stop preventable childhood eye diseases through early detection. Together, we are shining a light on outreach efforts worldwide, amplifying voices, and uniting communities behind this critical cause. Awareness sparks action, action drives early detection, and early detection saves lives.
Thank you for standing with us in this mission. Together, every effort counts, pushing our mission forward, making an impact today, and changing the future for children worldwide.

Awareness in the Headlines |
|
|
This month, KnowTheGlow was preparing to join Prevent Blindness on Capitol Hill for a special World Sight Day Congressional Hearing in support of the Eyes on the EDVI Act. Unfortunately, the hearing has been postponed due to the government shutdown. But our advocacy cannot pause. We are calling on our community to step forward in a grassroots effort. Please reach out to your local representatives and encourage them to support the EDVI Act. Your voice is powerful, and together we can keep children’s vision and eye health a priority in Congress. |

Bisrat’s Glow Story - Ethiopia |
|
|
When Ermias Kibreab’s son, Bisrat, was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma at only three months old, his parents began a long search for answers that eventually led them from Ethiopia to Kenyatta National Hospital in Kenya, where he received life-saving treatment under Dr. Kahaki Kimani.
Though both of Bisrat’s eyes were removed to stop the cancer, he has grown into a confident and accomplished fifteen-year-old, a student, musician, and advocate for children with disabilities. Together with his father Ermias Kibreab, now a PhD graduate in inclusive education, he helps raise awareness about retinoblastoma and encourages other families to seek timely medical care.

GLOWing With Student Impact
Our KnowTheGlow Student Chapters continue to grow GLOWbally! We are thrilled to share that we recently signed our first university chapter at Bayelsa Medical University in Nigeria, followed by another at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, with more partnerships in the pipeline.
We believe that students are the doctors and parents of tomorrow, and it is vital to educate them early about recognizing The Glow and other early signs of childhood eye conditions. Through these student chapters, we are building a generation of advocates who will help ensure that children everywhere receive timely diagnosis and care.

Dr. Lucy Njambi - Kenya |
|
A pediatric ophthalmologist and retinoblastoma specialist at Kenyatta National Hospital, Dr. Lucy Njambi is at the forefront of retinoblastoma genetics research in Kenya. As the principal investigator of a collaborative grant with the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health in Toronto, she is leading a groundbreaking effort to build local capacity for molecular cancer research and genetic testing.
The project aims to establish sustainable, in-country genetic testing so families no longer need to send samples abroad. This will reduce wait times, improve diagnosis, and help train the next generation of scientists in Kenya. Dr. Njambi believes that awareness and genetics go hand in hand. When families understand inheritance patterns and the importance of early detection, children can access life-saving treatment sooner.
Keep posted to read more about Dr. Njambi’s inspiring story in an upcoming feature.
